This past week was one that was partially full of vacation laziness. The remainder was just catching up on work after being off for 9 days. Getting back into the groove of things is not always easy, especially when there are holidays coming up. In my personal time I have been primarily focused on creating a game world for my wife as a present. The world is being built with the Neverwinter Nights Aurora toolset and engine. It is quite robust for an 18 year old game. Bioware wrote their own scripting language for it called NWScript which is c-based. It's quite simple to pick up. I am using the Forgotten Realms as a base setting and then created an island off of the Sword Coast called "Kathe".
So far I've built the primary city, a labrynth of sewers and the cave system below. My next steps will be to built the surrounding landscapes out, focusing on a small mountainous region and a forest. Once the island itself is complete I plan on expanding out into portions of the Sword Coast as it is one of my favorite regions in Forgotten Realms. I have built modules in this game before, some that had a very large amount of players. But with those I had a lot of help from other builders and players who assisted with the total creation. With this I am doing all of the work on my own. So I am deciding how everything looks, the direction of the module and everything. It is an experience to say the least. I have been writing quests and storylines. As well as writing a lot of code to control sections of the game, how the module handles events, customizing spells and even creating a custom loot system.
Once it gets into a more presentable state, I will get some images up and maybe some sample code.
Speaking of code, I have realized that my scheduling of projects has been poor. I have a lot of stuff on my plate with work life and home life. My balance has been off and my sleep schedule has been completely wrecked for the last few months. My vacation allowed me to get some much needed rest. It also helped me identify some issues that I was having and why I was having them. I have not been letting myself sleep or relax at all. I have been going 110% for the last 16 months.
I have decided to scale back my active project lists to only focus on one project at a time and to stick to a project schedule. For instance, during the week I will work primarily on projects that I feel will help me grow professionally. And on the weekends I will work on my game projects that also allow me to grow professionally, I also get a lot more personal enjoyment out of working on them. That doesn't feel like a great thing to say. But with some of my projects I tend to hyper focus on them and stress on them too much. I love what I do and I love writing code. I hate letting it cause me to stress out and lose sleep. Which is what I need to work on right now. Don't sweat the small stuff they say. I'm gonna try that. I think... Maybe.
Happy Holidays! Hanukkah Sameach! Merry Christmas! Happy Festivus, I've got a lot of problems with you people and you're gonna hear them!
